UNITY LEWIS AKA YOUNG PRECISE
Unity Lewis aka Young Precise hails from the west coast and is armed with west coast swagger; however his message is unity for all no matter where you are from. Unity brings something fresh and different to the hip hop industry he became known for his quick and clear rhymes as a kid and was given the nickname ‘Young Precise’ from a friend. He describes his style as reality rap, according to Unity “I’m versatile and have been influenced by many different Hip-Hop styles.
Growing up in both Los Angles and Sacramento, Unity has said the gang-life surrounding him only motivated him to keep building his skills on the mic. He
was the kid that people protected because he could rap better than anyone his age; so he chose to rap about things that would inspire change.
When he was a teen, Unity founded a rap group with two other friends called ‘The Napalm Clique’. At 17 he got a break when Public Broadcasting Station
(PBS) asked Unity to document his senior year in high school for a documentary that was shown nation-wide.
As Unity grew in Oakland, so did The Napalm Clique. Several emcees that he met in the Bay joined the Clique, and the 13-man crew produced several albums together. They released the Napalm Clique Classique Mixtape in early 2007, which instantly gained popularity.
Unity has made a strong impact on YouTube with 75,000+ views of his Michael Jackson Tribute video “Shining”. His “Revolution” music video had a similar
ripple affect, created by Eklectyk Creative Media for the Napalm Clique; featuring Fred Hampton Jr. about the power of Hip- Hop in the classroom.
Currently Unity teaches the origins of Hip Hop to kids from Kindergarten to adults in Universities. Unity’s aim is to resurrect consciousness and bring knowledge back to community and youth. He teaches the initial principles of Afrika Bambaataa; which are peace, love, unity and safely having fun. Unity says” I bring that knowledge back to my community and to the youth so they can use that knowledge as a weapon against the system because they say the most dangerous thing in the world is an educated black person” Bringing about consciousness and awareness for peace and unity are his main goals he adds “ The biggest thug whether in the white house or on the block; all that he really wants at the end of the day is love and peace.” IN 2008 Unity and the Napalm Clique also did their part to encourage young people to vote in their video supporting Obama entitled “We need a president.”
Unity comes from a musical family his mother is a Reggae, Jazz and Soul singer and his father is a Caribbean Reggae artist. Unity was encouraged into music from a very early age and performed since a child at various venues including churches. When asked about his musical background he says; “I have the blessing from the elders so that’s how I know that what I’m doing is right. When it comes to this music thing I’m official and certified its me; its in my blood.” His mother is also a Yoga instructor and his father is a Caribbean Rastafarian and when asked how this impacted him growing up he says.” Obviously I’m mad open lol; I know how to breathe; and I know how to bring the spirit with everything I do and I got that soul.” Unity praises God for all he has achieved because to him the practice of making music is very spiritual.
Look out for Unity’s new album entitled Audio Veve Part 1.
Audio VeVe Part I is a lyrically charged project that has been described as The Coup meets Outkast. Audio VeVe, produced by Organized Elements, will be
released in two parts digitally through SoundVise. The project features Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Umar Bin Hassan of the Last Poets, and West Coast rap legend
Ms. Marvaless. Part I includes 6 tracks, select music videos, a comic book illustrated by Unity himself and an iPhone/ iPad application (search for “Unity
AKA YP in the Apple App Store).
Unity explains that the Goal of Audio VeVe Part 1 is to connect with his people in streets and ghettos going through hard times. He says, “The language I speak in is gritty because I’m describing their reality.” He uses that as a base and from there he plugs in all the higher knowledge to give his people hope and let them know they can escape their negative surroundings. He anticipates that Part II is going to be more positive and active in showing people that they can free themselves of negative surroundings and eventually to freedom. Volumes of Unity if you will.
When asked by The Rifa Madness Show which of the 7 deadly sins he was guilty of Unity said, “I would say pride and wrath because pride is the root of my wrath. I can take a good critique if you got some constructive criticism about my art or what I do; but I’m also very proud of what I do and my accomplishments so if u try to diss me or hate on me your definitely gonna feel my wrath. I’m working on that.” Unity Lewis is truly an beautiful human being with a genuine soul and an intelligent mind; In his world there is no duality, everyone is one. In tuned with nature and one with the environment. No hate all love.
He strikes a tone or chord in you of consciousness and awareness. Look out world Unity is here to make a change in volumes.
